Senghenydd Youth Drop In
Centre
Senghenydd Youth Drop In Centre (SYDIC) is a Voluntary Sector Company Limited by Guarantee. It is a multi-faceted engagement project that works in partnership with the young people and the local community to develop participation in, and commitment to; community projects, community development, cohesion and sustainability.
The project has been heralded as a best practice approach in developing sustainable community commitment to community regeneration and development in a disaffected area of Wales.
Established in 1997 the centre now offers a wide range of opportunities for young people and the local community to enhance personal and group skills, knowledge and understanding using participatory methods as highlighted in the Welsh Government policies and guidelines for working with young people and the wider community.
We are a professionally run organisation that is the main youth support service for the Aber Valley region of Caerphilly County Borough and aim to engage with young people on their terms. The provision is highly thought of locally and across the borough and has been flagged up as a best practice organisation working with young people, in fact SYDIC was the first youth organisation in the borough to receive the Children and Young Peoples Partnership Quality Mark. In 2014 Sydic members worked with animation company Gritty Realism to produce Shadows of Senghenydd, an animated tribute to the victims of the Senghenydd mining disaster. The film won Outstanding Contribution To Promoting & Supporting Culture Within Wales at the Youth Work Excellence Awards 2014 and Best Animation at the Zoom Cymru Young Film Maker Awards 2014. In 2015 SYDIC members worked on another animated film called 'Striking Stories, the film told the stories of the 1980's Miners Strike from a female perspective.' The film won best Best film at Zoom Cymru Film Awards 2016.
At present we have approximately 37% of the local young people directly accessing our services on a regular basis.
We offer a diverse range of programmes and activities that range from health, digital, arts and developing civic responsibilities and community cohesion.
